Over the years, Gary recognized three major opportunities in transportation management that exemplify his independent, disruptive and results oriented DNA. Through decades of experience partnering with the world’s largest brands and healthcare systems, Gary has cultivated relationships and developed processes that help DCI’s clients leverage their data and partners to drive significant cost savings across their supply chain. Hospital systems today experience problems that have persisted for decades across many transformative industries:
1980s - Motion Picture Industry
In 1980, Gary founded Distribution Concepts International (DCI) as the first and only independent freight management consulting firm to represent major motion picture studios in negotiating carrier rates and overseeing the carriers' shipment handling and on time delivery for their weekly theatrical 35MM film movie releases on a global scale. For the next ten years, DCI’s studio clients included MCA Universal Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Disney and Warner Bros.
1990s - High Technology Industry
In the 1990s, the high technology industry experienced tremendous growth. Although the high cost to import raw material from manufacturing sites in Asia to the United States was very apparent, most of the hi-tech companies lacked the internal resources and bargaining expertise to negotiate better pricing for international carrier services; DCI filled that gap. Their clients included Apple, Cisco, HP, Intel and Sanmina.
2000s - Healthcare Providers
In 2000, Gary co-founded one of the first 3rd Party Logistics Companies (3PLs), FDSI Logistics. FDSI, along with two other 3PLs, changed how medical product suppliers ship to hospitals over the next two decades. As a result of the cost saving freight management systems put in place by the 3PLs, the majority of suppliers are now unable to use freight as a profit center. Prior to the emergence of FDSI and the 3PLs, there was a combined combined $1B blind spot of exorbitant supplier hospital freight chargeback costs to some 6000+ hospitals across the United States.
There was significant resistance from the suppliers and other naysayers claiming, “it will never work.” Under Gary’s determination, drive and leadership, FDSI became one of the most successful and revolutionary companies in the freight management sector. The revelation of unnecessary freight costs and overspending helped virtually every hospital in the US to be more profitable.
2021 - Emergence of the 4PL Model
In 2015, after FDSI was acquired by Cardinal Health on behalf of Optifreight, Gary took some time off to be with his family. Five years later, he now recognizes complacency in the marketplace and hospital systems again needing to cut costs, lacking the resources to help themselves. Gary is again revolutionizing the industry by bringing to the market the first and only 4th Party Logistics (4PL) company, Distributions Concepts International (DCI).
